Don’t Forget Whose You Are

I know, I know. It looks like a typo; but believe me, it is intentional!

See, in today’s world, we are told to figure out who we are and tell everyone about it. Let me ask you. How many times have you heard the following questions?

  • Who are you dating?
  • What is your major?
  • Do you have a job?
  • How involved are you?
  • How many followers do you have?

And the questions go on and on…. And on and on. And on and on. You get it…

The truth of the matter: None of THOSE THINGS really matters. The world wants you to define WHO you are by your titles, your accomplishments, and your relationships.

We try to tell people who we are: the pretty one, the sporty one, the smart one, the strong one, the curious one. But on the inside, we feel like we’re the lost one, the broken one, the rejected one.

The only thing that truly matters: we belong to the ONE, the One True King.

And do you know who He is?

He is the author and finisher of our faith {Hebrews 12:2}

He is the healer {Psalm 30:2}

He is sovereign {2 Samuel 7:28}

He is worthy {Psalm 145:3}

He is a safe place {Psalm 61:3}

He is trustworthy {Psalm 9:1}

He is righteous {1 John 1:9}

He is the Savior {John 3:16}

AND SO MUCH MORE!!!

And you know what? That sure takes the pressure off of us. If He is all of those things and we are His, we are adopted into His kingdom and His inheritance.

But how do we begin to understand and combat those inaccurate ways we describe ourselves? Know this, friend. We praise a Savior who has His fair share of scars. He came down from Heaven to bear the everyday and excruciating pains we experience as sinners. As Louis Giglio so eloquently pointed out at Passion, when we get to heaven, we will raise our hands to a Savior who also has his scars. Scars on his hands, on his hip, on his head. He bore that pain and understands your feelings so intimately. But, those scars are only testaments to His victory. How? Because every scar represents a place where the pain stung, but you were not overcome. Instead, each one serves as a representation of the victory we have in Christ Jesus. He will use each fragment for your good and His glory.

When we inevitably are called home, we cannot take our instagram followers, our academic awards, our titles, or any of our possessions with us. But thankfully, we are all sons and daughters of the One True King, and we have an inheritance in heaven.

So when you’re struggling to figure out who you are, remember WHOSE you are.
